My practice specialty is the treatment of stress and trauma and I have learned that when you mention PTSD people instantly think of the soldier reacting to combat. It is difficult to explain that trauma comes not just on the battlefield but can occur with everyday people put in very traumatic or stressful situations.
And then I ran into this video where the young woman puts a very human face to the symptoms. She does an excellent job of explaining the overt response to seemingly simple things that we may not be aware are triggers for the alert reaction. She also provides hope that once she sought treatment and understood why this occurred that there is a road to recovery.
Its amazing how people have such preconceived ideas of who may fit the description of having a disease, disorder, etc… People should realize that things happen to any gender, age, ethnic group….I still get raised eyebrows when people discover that I’m a widow… Anyone can be a widow/widower-.
I feel and understand how that woman in the video is going through…People do treat others differently. I know I’ve been treated differently just because of my status…
It would be nice if someone would do a documentary similar to that short video.
Chrissy,
Yes, we all carry scars that are not readily apparent which makes it difficult for those around us to understand. But, there is help and the idea is to reach out to help ourselves and others understand.
