I was preparing myself for the day this morning, sitting outside on the pergola and just allowing my mind to wander. Looking around I found myself thinking: “What a beautiful morning, and despite all the challenges of the coming day, I am glad to be alive because look how far I have come.”

I mention this because I truly believe we are all works in progress and everyday is a step, though sometimes winding, in that progression. That thought is what compels me to offer insight, advice, and direction in this blog. It is the thought that a word or a phrase might just be the thing that causes you (and even me) to move in a direction that can change our lives for the better.

Sitting there enjoying the cool morning breeze the thought also came to me that we spend a good deal of time looking forward and reminding ourselves where we want to go. For some, there maybe feelings of guilt or wasting time because there is so much that we still have to do or should have done. However, a lot can be learned from periodically looking back at how far we have come on our journey. That momentary look back helps to put all the time and effort into perspective and in its own way allows us to savor where we are currently and hope to go.

I know it sounds strange that looking back has the power to propel us forward, but it does. It provides an opportunity to remind ourselves of all the struggles we have encountered and obstacles we have overcome. It tells us that the road forward is not always a straight line and sometimes on the road from A to B we sometimes visit C and that is OK, because it makes enjoying where we are much more sweet.

And so, every now and then as you travel down the yellow brick road, turn around and just look at how far you have come…
