Grow not Weary in Well Doing…

I have started a project for something I desperately want to finish and found myself doing all kinds of other things to get around completing this tough task. I took a step back and asked myself why I found completing it so difficult. What came to me was the fact I was afraid others would be judging me and my completed work. And, by doing other things it took my mind and focus off the project I needed to complete. It also let me know how circumstances conspire to redirect your focus away from the things you want to accomplish.

The war is not with the event but within ourselves

Once I came up with the reason and confronted it I realized that judged or not, the sun would come up tomorrow (I hope) and my life would go on. Many times we create in our minds horrors ten times more terrible than the event that actually awaits us as a means of giving ourselves an excuse to quit. We don’t want to admit that we are afraid so we allow our minds to go into overdrive creating scenes that give us permission to say “This will never work” or “This is beyond what I am able to do.” The idea is to take our focus off the thing we want and on to the things we fear to the point we no longer go forward and finally stop. I am reminded of the scene from the Bible where Peter gets out of the boat to walk on water toward Jesus, but when he saw the wind, he became afraid and began to sink. He redirected his focus off of the thing that he desired and on to his fears and began to falter. Where we focus is as important as focus itself, because what is focus without clear direction?

Courage is not the absence of fear…

We have entered an age where we fear fear, without realizing that fear is a good thing. It is something that is built into each and every one of us. And, it is a good thing in that it causes us to take a second look or a little extra care. Now, going back to the case of Peter, when he saw the wind rather than acknowledging it and keeping his focus on the thought that Jesus was there to help him, he placed his focus strictly on his fear and started to sink. The moral being that fear is there to help us, but it cannot carry us. Vision and focus are the things that hold us up. True courage is therefore not the absence of fear but moving forward in spite of your fears.

And now, I’ll go and finish that project…
