Many people like the idea of running a business or start-up. The current podcast episode explores beyond the fantasy to some of the traits you will need to be successful.

A good number of people see jumping on the small business or start-up bandwagon as the ultimate adventure. Well beyond the idea of the ultimate road trip though is a lot of work and stress. Deciding if you are the Start-up type requires a good deal of soul searching and honest appraisal on your part to recognize how your personality type responds to the traits required to be successful. So let’s look at a few…

How disciplined are you?

Like it or not a degree of denial and self organization are musts because one of the prime problems most small business owners report is getting sidetracked either personally or strategically. The temptations are legion but the magic begins and ends with you. Hustle becomes your middle name.

Can you set boundaries?

Working from home means that short walk down the hall to where your regular life is lived becomes easy for you or others, and before you know it your day is over. Establishing and “office” barrier is crucial.

Do you like making decisions… a lot of decisions?

It sounds simple at first, but the steady drip, drip, drip of things you must decide can wear on you, but you are the decider of all things big and small. Be aware no decision is ever really final because things change. You have to enjoy making decisions to accept this arrangement.

Listen to the full list of points on the podcast, and if you answer yes to all of them then you are the perfect type to start a business. I say that because, when the stars are aligned correctly and you survive the trials to finally get your venture up and running, all the things I mentioned will have been well worth it as you stand back to bask in the glory of your now well oiled machine.
