Social Media was supposed to help make connections but connections are not relationships which the Mr. Nice Guy guest Doug Sandler says are what will grow your business. The current podcast explores why despite being digital, customers still want the human touch. How you connect with your customer becomes critical to your business strategy.

Doug Sandler of “The Mr Nice Guy Program” makes the point that just having a Facebook page or being on Twitter are simply not enough if you want to really connect with your customer and stand out in their minds as the person who can solve a problem or need they face. And, it makes a lot of sense because there are hundreds of sites and pages offering the same thing that your business may be offering. So why should a customer choose you?

Social media offers instant connection but connection is not a feeling of relationship which is missing from a good number of marketing campaigns. Fast response does not make up for customer service that does not make the point of why you will enjoy working with one company over another. Influence marketing is designed to positively influence the the decision of which company to choose.  In the language of business it is called your “value Dougproposition” and Doug goes into detail during our chat about ways you as a business owner can help your customer see the value of dealing with your business.

What I discovered during the podcast was that being “Mr. Nice Guy” is something Doug has done throughout his life and then realized how it applied to developing a business. You’ll hear him say that a number of businesses see customer service as a low level function in growing a business when in his mind it is the main means of doing so. The same goes for social media, using it is not the same as engaging people in a meaningful way that invites them to consult you when a situation arises.

We live in an age where people are busy, and in a lot of instances have their heads down doing everyday stuff. You as a business owner, or simply someone hoping to network, have to position yourself to connect with your target audience so that they not only know who you are but feel you have given them a reason to look up and want to engage with you. Listening to the podcast is a good first step in that direction.
