Recently I did a post on “Bullying in The Workplace” and received a dramatic response (very few people made comments but the post became one of the most popular). Also, in that article I suggested you learn as much as possible in order to increase your worth and thereby increase the possibility of either moving within the company or just away from the abusive boss. Whenever I mention this some people immediately tell me they don’t have time to take a class. And, my immediate response is “After viewing the kittens, learn something… on You Tube!”

I know, I know, you go there to view videos that always seem to include a dog doing funny stuff or a cute kitten. But, pretty much anything you want to learn, there is a tutorial on You Tube.

I have used it to learn video editing software, music editing software, and recently when I wanted to set up a data base for a project I’m working on, advanced functions for Excel. The thing I like about learning stuff on You Tube is that you can be as general or specific as you want in terms of what you want to view and can do it in short chunks. I like the short chunks part because it allows me to zero right in on the area about which I have questions and then try it out as I go along. Many companies have figured this out as well and no longer provide hard copy instruction manuals but will post detailed videos on You Tube to walk you through using their product.

The fact that you can learn at your own pace, don’t have to register for a class, or use a lot of gas to travel across town to attend that class is a definite plus. If you know that another department is requiring a particular skill, You Tube is your source for learning it. Being able to add the words “proficient” or “highly proficient” in a skill to your resume might be the key to separate yourself from the crowd seeking the position. Worried that an interviewer might question the fact you didn’t take a class? Saying that you taught yourself and taking along samples of your work shows that you are a go getter and they don’t have to hold your hand in learning the position.

I know it is not a cure all for the abusive boss, but the more value you bring to the market place the greater your chances of getting out of an abusive situation. So… after viewing those cute kitten, learn something!
