With so much going on in the United States and around the world today, we are put in the position of asking is there really anything to be thankful for as we survey a landscape of troubles. Yes, it is difficult at the moment, but I offer a resounding yes!

I know it is hard to look beyond all the marketing hype that has relegated Thanksgiving to a date holding back the shopping frenzy that has become Christmas. But, I refuse to let the marketing machine win. Thanksgiving is a holiday of looking back (over all that we have triumphed) and allowing ourselves to gaze forward (holding on to that wistful thing called hope).

Thanksgiving is a time of standing up among the carnage and rubble that may be our lives at the moment and proclaiming to the world “I’m still here!” A time of realizing that “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

And so I say to all this Thanksgiving: I for one am glad you are still here. I also stand with you in hope for all the things you want to come to pass.

Happy Thanksgiving!
