It’s difficult sometimes to think of writers as entrepreneurs and yet Annie Acorn demonstrates a career path of moving from being an accomplished writer to developing her own publishing company. The current podcast episode is not only the feature of a writer but also a master class in developing and growing a start-up.

Meeting Annie Acorn of Annie Acorn Publishing, even if via Skype, is to encounter a soft spoken innovator. And make no mistake, she is as innovative as any hoodie wearing Silicon Valley disruptor. Hers is a journey of having the good fortune to land in a small Georgia town as a traveling spouse and encountering a writing group that showed her how to develop her writing talent from a way of looking at the world into the diamond of a published writer. The journey continues as she uses that same writing talent to move through the ranks of different companies and develop a number of her own businesses along the way.

Writing has always been her ticket to both self expression and later helping others understand and perfect the gift of observation they had been given. The story unfolds as Annie Acornshe decides to develop her own publishing company where writers, and especially women writers, could receive encouragement and direction similar to what she received at the beginning of her own career. Making the leap to add publisher to the title of writer proved no easy task as she, like any entrepreneur, had to tackle the task of putting out fires in order to survive the early years of establishing her start-up. As she describes it during the podcast: “Business is business, is business” and then proceeds to conduct a master class in the skills and mindset you will need to master in establishing and growing any business from the plumber to the film maker.

Anyone thinking of starting a business needs to hear her words. I say that because she provides the inspiration that no matter your current situation or location if you seek to use the resources that you find along the way and realize you don’t need to think outside the box because you actually don’t have a box, you can be successful. Hers are sobering words to highlight the less than romantic work of bringing your dreams into reality and then learning to ride the wave of that success in a manner that will allow you to continue to be successful. The podcast is a master class indeed, and all I have to say is look out Silicon Valley!
